Friday, 10 November 2023: Eskom unveiled the first of its kind largest Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project not only in South Africa but in the African continent. Eskom officially opened the Hex BESS site at Worcester in the Western Cape yesterday.
[Image: Adobestock] Envision Energy has scored a contract with EDF, to supply 257MW of battery energy storage systems (BESS) capacity in South Africa. The capacity comprises three BESS for the Oasis 1 cluster of projects, amounting to 1028MWh of storage.
The 100 MW project with 12 hours of full-load energy storage will be able to reliably deliver a stable electricity supply to more than 200,000 South African homes during peak demand periods, even well after the sun has set.
The project is located 20 kilometers west of Sasolburg in the Free State Province of South Africa. It will provide approximately 300 million kilowatt-hours of clean electricity to the South African national grid each year, offering crucial support in addressing the local power crisis and promoting regional economic and social development.
