Our modelling shows, that by 2030, smart solar building solutions could meet more than half of EU daily energy system flexibility needs, and a third of its annual flexibility needs. That means a more cost-effective system, resilient to shocks and strengthening Europe’s energy security.
Solar PV and wind energy become the cornerstone of the transformed energy system, with solar PV being crucial for achieving self-sufficiency. By 2050, 5.1 TW of solar and 1.3 TW of onshore and offshore wind capacity will be installed across Europe (see Supplementary Fig. 13), taking up 57% and 36% of the electricity generation, respectively.
Smart solar buildings enhance efficiency, reduce costs, and strengthen grid reliability in mature solar markets. Our modelling shows, that by 2030, smart solar building solutions could meet more than half of EU daily energy system flexibility needs, and a third of its annual flexibility needs.
Many EU countries support solar adoption through various incentives, including tax breaks, subsidies, and rebates. Programs like net metering allow households to offset their electricity costs by feeding excess power back into the grid, making the financial case for solar even stronger.
