Ireland inaugurated the country’s ‘largest’ grid-scale battery energy storage facility, located in Poolbeg Energy Hub. The 75 MW/150 MWh BESS is aimed at enhancing grid stability and facilitating greater integration of renewable energy into Ireland's power network.
The Dublin Energy Hub, housing the largest battery, serves as a testbed for the future of clean energy in Ireland. It is envisioned as a hub for integrating various green technologies, including offshore wind, hydrogen, and carbon capture and storage, all working together to power a sustainable future for the Emerald Isle.
The framework recognises that the energy storage landscape is rapidly evolving. While Ireland currently relies primarily on battery storage and the Turlough Hill Power Station in County Wicklow, new technologies are emerging that could play a key role in the future.
At Energy Storage Ireland 2025, the message was clear: energy storage is central to a stable, low-carbon grid, and while short-duration battery systems (BESS) are available, long-duration storage (LDES) supply is in its infancy, however ESBN has a structure to enable LDES rollout in Ireland. The technology is advancing fast.
